A Year...

Hello all!

I can't believe it's been a year (almost to the day) since I have made a post.  I really want to get back to posting on my blog.

However, I think soon this blog is going to get a makeover.  I may be done with "Sugar and Stitches" and may move on to something more about life as a single girl.

I'll share my experiences with living alone, my dog, traveling, and food and crafts.

To begin with how about some photos from the trip I am currently on :)

So when I get home, expect a whole new blog.

Not much crafting right now

With all the packing I've been doing I don't have a lot of time for crafting or baking.  However, I have crocheted a few things, mostly small.  Most of my supplies, though are in boxes and most of my yarn and fabric are in vacuum bags.

Anyway, I follow a blog called Under the Sycamore.  Not sure if anyone of you do as well.  But, just recently Ashley and her husband added a new little one to their family of 6.  Ashley calls her Little One.  She's from China.  She's SO cute!  She also has a cleft palette.  Ashley has written quite a bit about the whole process of adoption and the projects she supports for other children that have cleft palettes.  But yesterday she posted about her experience with other people out in public- people staring, pointing, whispering.  I instantly thought of my friend, Andrea.  She has a prosthetic leg.

She's beautiful.  When these photos were taken, we were in LA.

We went to Disneyland for a couple of days and she was such a trooper.  Her prosthesis is all the way up to her hip so she gets tired after a while because walking takes a lot of effort.  But she didn't complain.  Her twin sister, Amanda, and I were more concerned with her than she was.  For me, it was my first time going out into such a public and crowded place with Andrea.  A lot of people stared.  I got a little angry.  But, honestly, because I'm so used to Andrea's "walk" it took me a while to even notice that people were staring.  Then I did and I wanted to yell at them.  But I refrained because Andrea didn't even seem to notice.  I asked Amanda about it, and she said they've gotten used to it.  Andrea's had the prosthesis since she was a baby.

It's funny how self-conscious I get about the scar on my throat sometimes- from my thyroid surgery.  But when I ask people if it's really obvious, no one even knows it's there.  I think sometimes people are staring at it when they're talking to me, but no one is.  And then there are people like Andrea or Ashley's Little One that are born with deformities and the like, and they are just used to it- and don't even notice stares and whispers.

I think that's confidence- when you don't notice anyone else around you talking about you or staring at you.

DIY Mint Sugar Scrub

I keep seeing all these scrubs on Pinterest and various blogs, and so I decided to make one of my own.  I work at Starbucks and so I'm on my feet all the time.  My feet get sore often.  And when I'm not wearing tennis shoes for work, I'm wearing sandals, so my feet get dry (ew).  Therefore, time for a foot scrub.

Here's my recipe.

Mint Sugar Scrub

fresh mint- I think I used about 10 leaves
3/4 c raw sugar
1/4 c olive oil
a few drops of body oil, mine was Burt's Bees

I first mulled the mint to get all the oil out of it.

Then just mix all the ingredients together.

I added a little lime juice to liven it up a little.

Then massage the scrub into your feet or hands , let it sit for a few minutes, and then rinse.  Your skin will feel amazing!

(please ignore my jacked up nailpolish)  My feet were nice and soft.  Can't wait to make more.

Cupcake Decorating Party

In a little more than a week I'm going to be having a Cupcake Decorating Party for several little girls.  It's not celebrating anything special, just a party for girls only.  I've been searching on Pinterest for different ideas.  Here's what I've found:

I love the first party, so cute.  And the second is a class but gives me ideas for layout on the table.

I'm going to have the girls make their own stand for their cupcakes too.  Then we'll decorate chocolate and vanilla cupcakes.  Don't judge me, but I plan to buy some frosting.  I'm just not the best at making it, and don't have a lot of time to practice beforehand.  I am going to make the cupcakes.

Found some edible glitter and homemade sprinkles on Pinterest.

I'm also going to make some little favors for the girls with some hair flowers I've made, and maybe some little lip glosses or something.

I made these invitations:

So, the decorations are going to be colorful and fun.

I can't wait.  I'll be sure to post photos of the girls and I hope they all have fun, I know I will.

Coming Soon...

Yesterday I went to Hobby Lobby to get some velcro... needless to say I didn't just get velcro.  I never do.  I always get more than I came for, however I only spent less than $9.  The velcro is for a cute little project that I will soon post- you're going to love it.

Another thing I got while I was there was some crochet thread.  I decided I want to make some doilies.  Why?  Well, why not?  I've never done it, so I figured I'd give it a try.

But then I thought, what am I going to do with doilies?

Then I found these:

title

From: Oh My Good Knits!  She has some super cute patterns and this looks simple enough (maybe).

From: Ravelry  Super cute little doily earrings!  I think I'll make these first.

From: Ravelry (this is a different link from the above)  These ones look a little more difficult than the doily ones, so we'll see if I can accomplish these.

Anyway, I'll show the end result soon.

And I'll have a tutorial soon!

Things I've Learned as a Single Girl

For those of you who don't know, I'm 25.  And up until about 8 months ago, I lived with my mom and step-dad, Donyvan.  Now, I live in a condo with my grandma, who I call Nan.  In living "with" I mean we split everything, so we're pretty much roommates.  So, I'm on my own.  Financially, that is.  I still have my family to lean on in times of need.

In those last 8 months, I've learned a lot.  Well, honestly, I'd say I've learned a lot in the last couple of years.  I've learned things about life, people, and, mostly, about myself.  A lot of things my family and friends told me, but I never really took what they were saying to heart until I lived it.

So, this post is just to give some advice to my fellow single girls, or some that are soon to be single or live on their own.

These aren't in any particular order:

1)  Keep your place clean!  You never know when someone is going to stop by, and the more often you clean the less time it will take you when you do it.  If something's not really really dirty then it'll be a breeze to do a quick clean-up.  I admit my mom cleaned a lot for me when I lived at home.  Now, I do a lot of the cleaning and I don't seem to mind because I love living in a clean place.  Plus, do you really think a man wants to marry someone who's a slob?  If he does, then that probably means he's one too.  Do you want to marry a slob??

2)  Learn to cook.  And no, Ramen noodles don't count.  It's not hard.  If I can do it, so can you.  Just start simple.  Go on sites like All Recipes or find a blog about easy recipes.  As long as you know you're way around the kitchen enough to make some chicken and vegetables for a simple meal or bake chocolate chip cookies, then you're doing good.  Plus, think about the money you'll save and the calories from not eating out all the time.

3)  Keep your freezer stocked.  Whether it's Eggos, chicken breast, or even just frozen dinners, the freezer is your friend.  As a single girl you can also make a full recipe that makes 4-6 servings, freeze it, and have food for weeks.

4)  Keep your place smelling good.  I'm a little weird about this.  I love for our condo to smell good.  I hate when the kitchen smells like steamed broccoli or the laundry room smells like the dogs food, or the air just smells stale.  This is also another good thing to keep in mind if you have people that may just drop by.  You don't want someone to walk in your place thinking: "what is that smell?"

5)  (This isn't really just for a single girl)  This is your FRIEND!!!  I love press n seal.  Enough said. **I'm not getting paid by Glad**

6)  Stay organized!  This mostly applies to bills.  Don't let that water bill get lost in a pile of papers.  Buy a calendar and use it.  Write the bills on their due date and the amount you owe.  A lot of bills you can pay online and even set them up for automatic payments.  If you're forgetful, do this!  I learned this the hard way multiple times.  It's no fun.

7)  PAY YOUR BILLS!!!  If it means giving up that new pair of shoes, purse, or dress, DO IT!  Even if it means eating Ramen noodles every night.  You do not want to ruin your credit, or get evicted because you can't budget.

8)  Make friends with your neighbors, or at least meet them.  (unless they're creepers)  You just never know when you might get locked out without your phone, or need some sugar.

9)  Don't buy toilet paper from the Dollar Store.  Unless you are just really really desparate and poor, I don't recommend it.  It's really not worth the money you will save.  You end up using twice as much because it's basically like nothing.

10)  Do things for other people.  Call it the "Golden Rule," karma, or paying it forward.  In my experience, the more nice things you do for people then either that person will do something nice for you, or out of the blue someone else will.  This especially applies to your parents.  They did things for you over a span of 18+ years.  But them a cup of coffee or invite them over for dinner.  Then if, one month, you're having problems making ends meet they might just buy you some groceries or fill you gas tank.

11)  Learn to sew.  I don't care if it's an entire dress or just sewing on a button.  Granted I learned to sew when I was probably 12 or 13 and made an apron when I was probably 15.  But, I know there are girls who have no idea how to sew.  It's not hard.  Don't sike yourself out and think it's going to be too time-consuming and you're going to jab your finger 100 times.  Just try it.  I strongly believe it's a good skill to have.

12)  Thank your parents.  Listen to their advice.  They DO know a lot.  They've probably lived what you're going through.  They can be your friends- no one whould judge you for that.

I'm sure there are more things.  And I know as soon as I post this I will think of more, but for now that is my list.  Enjoy.  And take my advice to heart.

Crochet Projects

I have been trying to keep up with blogging, but I seem to forget about it.  That's why I love that I can schedule my posts to post at a later date.  It's so great for us forgetful people.

Anyway, when I'm not blogging, I'm working or crocheting...A LOT!  I've been working on a lot of different things.

I've asked some of my friends to send me some requests.  Then I either send them off as gifts or, most of the time, list them in my Etsy store to make some money :)

Here's a taste of what I've been working on:

Baby girl elf hat for a friend to give to her niece

Newborn booties for the same friend for her niece

Newborn booties to list in my shop

Hammock for my cousin (used for photography)

I also made some monster baby booties I forgot to take photos of and now I'm working on a Yoda beanie with earflaps.  It's SO cute!  I may sell it to my brother-in-law for his nephew.  Then I'm going to crochet a monster beanie.  Then a pillow.  I'll take photos and share with everyone.

Temecula, CA Wine Country

I moved to Murrieta, CA about 7 weeks ago.  And we're right next to Temecula (Murrieta and Temecula are pretty much "twin cities").  Today, my grandma, Nan as I call her, suggested we take a drive to the Wine Country in Temecula, on the Southeast side of town.  After some maneuvering through town for about a half an hour- there was a ton of construction and we still get turned around- and a trip to Starbucks we made it to our first winery.  No, we didn't actually sample anything; we just wanted to look around.

It kind of sucked that all the trees are dead right now, but it was still a gorgeous day.

This winery is actually owned by a friend of ours.  Well, co-owned and he doesn't do much with the business.  It's a beautiful place.  All the photos to follow are from there.

This is the view from the wedding site.

Inside the tasting room.

The last time my mom was here with my step-dad she said there was no one here, but the place was busting with people when we were there.

These trees always remind me of "Under the Tuscan Sun" when her friend is standing under them and she calls them "creepy Italian trees."  So, true they are weird.

Even though the vines are all dry it's still a gorgeous view.

After we left Leoness, we took a long drive to the end of the wine trail then circled back around to head back into Temecula.  We thought about stopping for lunch, so we stopped here at Ponte Winery.

However, the restaurant was not cheap, and so we just meandered into the tasting room to check it out (and we used the bathroom :)

Nan, shopping in the Ponte tasting room.

Lots and lots of wine.

After we left here we headed back to Temecula, and went to Panera Bread for lunch.  All around it was a fun day out in Wine Country.  Can't wait for friends to come and visit so we can share it with them.

A dress on the flesh...

Yes, my title is weird, but hey it's what it is.

I made this dress a while ago.  And I sent it off to the friend who I made it for and she told me she'd send a picture whenever she had her daughter wear it.  So, finally I get on Facebook today and there's a PICTURE!!!  I was so excited.

Oh my goodness I was so excited!  I've never seen anything I've made actually on someone.  I think it turned out so cute.

Now, I can't wait to make more and spread my sewing love :)
